Why Non-Profit?

History

Verami, Inc. began with the vision of co-founder Ruth Sieck, who has been an International Student and Scholar Advisor in the Boston area for nearly 20 years. While working with international students and researchers first at Boston University and then at Partners HealthCare, Ruth became aware that many internationals studying and working in the United States had misconceptions about immigration laws and regulations, questions about life in the U.S., and a strong desire for relationships with people they could trust. Through personal experience and conversation with colleagues, Ruth noticed that though many international advisors would prefer to focus on relationships with clients, offices are often overburdened with reporting, paperwork, and tracking systems. As a result, advisors spend much less time helping clients with long-term planning because they must focus on each client's immediate concerns. The problem is particularly serious in the post-9/11 world, where tighter government regulations require closer monitoring of internationals in the United States.

To meet the needs of international students, researchers, and professionals in a holistic way and to supplement the work of international offices, Verami was founded as a non-profit organization in January 2003 by Ruth Sieck and Jenn Raley Miller. The vision of Verami, "spread truth and foster relationships", is reflected in the name, which comes from the Latin words veritas (truth) and amicus (friend).

I regret that something like this did not exist earlier, when I was making some plans for my future.
